Shaking hands before a presentation, a pounding heart before an exam or audition, a voice that wobbles on stage — performance and stage anxiety is common, and it can be managed. Talk to an IMC-registered doctor by phone or video about what happens to you and what you have coming up. €39.99 by phone, €44.99 by video. Not for emergencies — call 112 or 999.
Who this consultation is for
Speaking and presenting
Talks, pitches, meetings, interviews, a speech at a wedding — anywhere you have to stand up and be listened to.
Performing
Music, drama, dance and sport: auditions, recitals, matches and competitions where nerves get in the way of what you have practised.
Tests and assessments
Driving tests, oral exams and practical assessments, where the physical side of nerves makes it hard to show what you can do.
What happens in the consultation
You describe it
What you notice before and during the event — trembling, a racing heart, sweating, a dry mouth, your mind going blank — and when your next one is.
The doctor checks your health
Expect questions about asthma or wheeze, your heart, other conditions, the medicines you already take, and alcohol. Your answers decide what is safe for you.
You leave with a plan
Practical techniques for the day, and talking therapy if nerves hold you back more widely. If a medicine could ease the physical symptoms and is safe for you, the doctor explains how to use it — including trying it once on an ordinary day first, never for the first time on the day itself.
Good to know before you book
- Book a few days before your event, not on the morning. If the doctor suggests something to try, you need time to try it first.
- For adults aged 18 and over.
- The doctor decides. A consultation is an assessment, not a guarantee of any particular treatment. Many people do well with technique and preparation alone.
- Sedatives are not prescribed for performance or stage anxiety. They slow your thinking and reactions — the opposite of what you need on the day.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding? The doctor will usually advise you to see your own GP in person.
When a different consultation suits you better
If anxiety affects you most days rather than around particular events, if you have panic attacks, or if your mood has been low, choose the Online Doctor Consultation instead so the doctor can look at the bigger picture. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call 112 or 999 now.
