Confidential 4th-generation HIV antigen/antibody test.

Category:

Description

A confidential HIV test taken at home, using the same generation of test used in clinics.

What this test measures

Fourth-generation combined HIV antigen and antibody test, detecting both HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies and the p24 antigen.

Who it is for

  • A specific incident of concern
  • A new partner, or condomless sex
  • Routine sexual health screening
  • Anyone who has never tested and would like to know

Window period

45 days. Fourth-generation tests detect most infections from around 18 days, but 45 days is the point at which a negative result can be considered conclusive. Testing earlier is worthwhile if you are worried — just be prepared to repeat it.

If you have had a recent high-risk exposure

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) can prevent HIV infection, but it must be started within 72 hours and the sooner the better. If your exposure was within the last 72 hours, do not wait for a postal test — go to an emergency department or a sexual health clinic today.

What a result means

A reactive result on a screening test always requires a confirmatory test — it is not a diagnosis on its own. A GP will contact you to explain the result and arrange next steps. HIV today is a manageable long-term condition, and people diagnosed and treated promptly have a normal life expectancy.

What happens next

Once the laboratory reports, a GP registered with the Irish Medical Council reviews your result alongside the information you gave us and explains what it means in plain English. GP review is included in the price — we do not release raw numbers without interpretation.

Important limitations

This is a screening test, not a diagnosis. A result in range does not rule out every cause of a symptom, and a result out of range does not by itself confirm a condition. If you feel unwell, see a doctor in person regardless of what this test shows. This service is not for emergencies — call 112 or 999 if you are seriously unwell.
